At Abingdon Primary School, our English curriculum aims to teach children to write, read and speak fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others, and others can communicate with them. All children will have the chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually through our diverse bespoke curriculum.
Reading
Reading is a vital skill that will support children’s learning across not just English, but the whole curriculum. In line with our ARCH principles, readers at Abingdon are aspirational, resilient and committed. As a school, we ensure that our children are taught to read with fluency, accuracy and understanding through a variety of learning opportunities.
Above all, we want children in our school to become enthusiastic, independent and reflective readers who have a love for reading. In order for our children to fulfil their potential in reading, parental support is essential so that they can practice the skills taught in school at home.
Phonics
As a whole school, we are committed to using the Sounds-Write (linguistics phonics) approach to assist the children from the start of school to learn to read, write and spell independently, with accuracy, understanding and confidence. When they are ready, children will be given a decodable reading book to practice at home as well as a reading for pleasure book to share.

Writing
At Abingdon, we believe that broadening minds and experiences is important in developing children’s writing. The written word is developed through school trips, drama experiences, speaking and listening activities within a real life context which is so important to developing language and an understanding of stories, texts or topics. Our writing always has a clear purpose, with carefully planned impact events, along with parent events for showcasing work throughout school.
